I took this picture in 2026 when I came back to Algiers after 6,5 years of absence. It depicts the cows of Ain Allah, an ordinary residential district where I grew up. When I was younger, I was fascinated by the calm and silent yet very charismatic presence of these cows in the middle of this very lively and urbanized area with all its children running and yelling, its cars, and trucks revving, etc. As I moved to France and was kept away for years from this place, the image of these cows stuck to my mind and became a central element of my iconography. When you get back home after all this time, you can’t help but note what has changed and what has remained the same. It’s a way to measure the weight of time. In Ain Allah, it felt like nothing had changed. The same cows were still seating silently in the grass as the same children and the same cars were surrounding them. Dans la symbolique amazighe, le serpent incarne la forme de vie la plus brute. Au-delà de ses propriétés médicinales, cela est essentiellement dû à son anatomie : des mues et un corps à la forme épurée, dénué de membres apparents, en constante friction avec la terre. Aujourd’hui, on ne peut plus voir le serpent en béton. Il a été enseveli, nivelé et goudronné pour laisser place à la nouvelle route flambant neuve. Les virages ont disparu et le serpent a fini sous terre. Since then, the town has undergone rapid urbanization, a process that is accelerating today. At the time, I wanted to capture a record of this place in the midst of transition, fully aware that it would have completely changed by the time I returned. I took these photos on the way to my mother’s house, “the turns” as we called them. Along these turns snaked a massive concrete structure of unknown purpose. From curve to curve, it would emerge from the ground and immediately disappear again. Sometimes severed, sometimes hidden in the vegetation, sometimes exposed to the sun, it followed its own discreet path, parallel to ours. In Amazigh symbolism, the snake embodies the most primal form of life. Beyond its medicinal properties, this is essentially due to its anatomy: its molting and a streamlined body, devoid of visible limbs, in constant friction with the earth. Today, the concrete serpent can no longer be seen. It has been buried, leveled, and paved to make way for the brand-new road. The turns have disappeared, and the snake has been buried. J’ai pris cette photo en 2026, à mon retour à Alger après six ans et demi d’absence. Elle représente les vaches de Ain Allah, un quartier résidentiel ordinaire dans lequel j’ai grandi. Quand j’étais plus jeune, j’étais fasciné par la présence calme, silencieuse et charismatique de ces vaches au cœur de la vie de ce quartier animé, avec tous ses cris d’enfants et ses bruits de moteurs. Lorsque j’ai déménagé en France et que j’ai été éloigné de cet endroit pendant des années, l’image de ces vaches est restée gravée dans mon esprit et est devenue un élément central de mon iconographie. Quand on rentre chez soi après tout ce temps, on ne peut s’empêcher de remarquer ce qui a changé et ce qui est resté. C’est une façon de mesurer le temps. À Ain Allah, j’ai eu ’impression que rien n’avait changé. Les mêmes vaches étaient toujours assises en silence dans l’herbe, entourées des mêmes enfants et des mêmes moteurs. C’est alors que j’ai regardé vers l’horizon et que j’ai vu cette gigantesque tour bleue qui n’existait pas la dernière fois que je suis venu. - ENGLISH: This work marks the start of a new series of photo transfers. I took this picture in 2026 when I came back to Algiers after 6,5 years of absence. It depicts the cows of Ain Allah, an ordinary residential district where I grew up. When I was younger, I was fascinated by the calm and silent yet very charismatic presence of these cows in the middle of this very lively and urbanized area with all its children running and yelling, its cars, and trucks revving, etc. As I moved to France and was kept away for years from this place, the image of these cows stuck to my mind and became a central element of my iconography. When you get back home after all this time, you can’t help but note what has changed and what has remained the same. It’s a way to measure the weight of time. In Ain Allah, it felt like nothing had changed. The same cows were still seating silently in the grass as the same children and the same cars were surrounding them.
